Biography of Ippitsusai Buncho
Ippitsusai Buncho (c.1725-c.1795), was a Japanese print artist active around 1767-1778. Buncho studied Kano painting and was an exponent of ukiyo-e. The style of actor portrait pioneered by himself and Katsukawa Shunsho had a decisive influence on the future development of the woodblock print. Later, Buncho was influenced above all by Suzuki Harunobu, one of the great masters of ukiyo-e. Buncho's own great masterpiece is generally considered to be his Ehon butai ogi, which he published jointly with Katsukawa Shunsho in 1770, and which contains the first realistic actor portraits. While these were his speciality, most of his works are in fact portraits of courtesans and pretty girls. Buncho s particular flair consists in the way he combined the realism of Katsukawa Shunsho with the lyricism and exquisite colorfulness of Suzuki Harunobu, thus creating a brilliance and quality all his own. Like many other ukiyo-e painters, Buncho was also a talented poet.
